coca-cola stories that sound fake but aren't
one company gave us santa claus, the coupon, happy soldiers, fanta, and sprite. mostly by accident. it also gave america a global image.
coca-cola used to include cocaine and was prescribed by doctors as medicine. when Pemberton invented it in 1886, it was a nerve tonic. a pharmacy product. NOT a soft drink. the main ingredients were caffeine from kola nuts, cocaine from coca leaves, and sugar. the caffeine alone was like 4x stronger than in today’s coca-cola drinks. so it was basically a stimulant cocktail called medicine. people back then thought this stuff was healthy asf. in 1890 cocaine was wellness. they removed cocaine from the recipe in 1903 :(
santa is red because of coca-cola!! HOW did i not know this?! coca-cola basically invented modern santa claus. if you read the original “Night Before Christmas” poem, santa is literally described as a little elf. NOT the fat red guy we all know. then, in 1931, coca-cola runs an ad campaign, and their brief was: make him as red as possible, and as fat as possible to include more red. that was the creative direction lol. it’s kinda crazy that ONE company can have such cultural power. not that it matters much but i feel like this should be TOLD BEFORE INTRODUCING SANTA. santa is RED because of coca-cola!! and it’s all from ONE ad campaign.
Fanta was invented in Nazi Germany because they couldn’t get coca-cola during the war. before ww2, coca-cola had a big presence in germany. they had factories setup and people were drinking it. but once the war started, they couldn’t ship american supplies to germany. so the german coca-cola factories were stuck without syrup and ingredients. but instead of shutting down, they just… improvised. they grabbed whatever was available (literally even leftover fruit scraps lol) and mixed something together that they could produce. that thing became fanta. obviously it’s not some dirty drink today but it’s crazy to think that THAT’S how it started. one of the most popular drinks in the world was born because a country couldn’t get coca-cola during ww2.
cocacola invented the coupon. and the reason it worked is kinda fucked.
this coupon is from 1888. a guy named Asa Candler bought the coca-cola recipe for $2,300 and started mailing these to random home addresses all over america. the offer was basically this: show up at any pharmacy and get a free drink. the drink, by the way, had cocaine, caffeine, and sugar in it. aint no way i’m saying no to that shit in the 1880s. i doubt anyone else is either. but the real genius is this: cocacola gave pharmacists their first barrel of syrup FOR FREE. so when coupon holders walked in asking for coke, the pharmacist already had it. they created demand out of thin air basically. they were the OG free trial exploiters.
“if anyone were to ask us what we are fighting for, half of us would answer: the right to buy coca-cola again.” that’s a real quote from an american soldier during ww2. this is WILD. so during ww2 the US military granted coca-cola something called “technical observer status,” which basically means they could build infrastructure the same way the MILITARY could! so as the US army is expanding worldwide, coca-cola is right there with them, setting up bottling plants and production lines at the same time!! and the result is that between 5 and 10 BILLION bottles were distributed to troops during the war. another soldier said this: “i always thought coca-cola was a wonderful drink. but on an island where few americans have every set foot, it is a godsend. i can truthfully say that i haven’t seen smiles spread over a bunch of boys faces as they did when they saw coca-cola in this godforsaken place.” idk if this is wholesome or dystopian, but it surely was genius from the coca-cola company. like there’s no way the soldiers are choosing any other brand when they come back after the war…
sprite was also from germany and was originally called “fanta clear lime” (“fanta klare zitrone” in german).
coca-cola estimates to sell 2,2 billions cans a day. that’s 25,000 servings every single second…
in 1985 coca-cola changed their formula and almost destroyed their company. by the early 80s, pepsi had been running blind taste tests (u try both drinks without knowing which is which, and pick the one you like better). and pepsi was the clear winner in these tests. cola even ran their own internal tests and got the same result. so they spent years secretly developing a new, “better” recipe. when they had a new formula they ran 200,000 taste tests to make sure the new flavor was superior. they were so confident that they not only added the new formula, they also killed the original one. (mind you, the og formula had been successful for *99* years). the CEO announced the new recipe on April 23, 1985 and called it “the surest move ever made”. but within weeks protest groups formed… even a black market for original coke cans appeared! after 79 days they caved and brought the original back as “Coca-Cola Classic,” and sales immediately rebounded. the new recipe was quietly rebranded “Coke II” in 1992 and then died. what’s interesting is that people genuinely preferred the new recipe when tasting it. but you can’t measure nostalgia and identity in a blind taste test, so it didn’t matter.
most of these were acquired podcast episode about coca-cola. shoutout to them, fire podcast!!
